The Beatitudes are guidelines for Christian living. It is very important to learn them. Many people have memorized them. They are listed in Matthew Chapter 5 as part of the Sermon on the Mount.  This sermon is one of the most well-known teachings of Jesus Christ.  The complete sermon is recorded in Chapters 5, 6 and 7.

Matthew 5:  3 - 12

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.

10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

The word “blessed’ means HAPPY!  My favorite is “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God”.

Matthew 5:  3 - 11

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

The poor in spirit are not physically poor, but they are spiritually meaning that they come to realize that they don’t have God and they obtain the Kingdom of Heaven.

4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

The people who mourn know about their sins and are sorry that they have sinned. They obtain comfort.

5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

If you are meek you are humble. The people who are meek have strength that they can control and they will take over the earth.

6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Those who search for righteousness will be content.

7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

The merciful are people who care for others and show mercy on others.  They will obtain mercy.

8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

The people who are pure in heart have hearts that are in the right place.  They will see and understand the heart of God.

9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.

The people who try to be calm and try to not fight with other people are peacemakers. They will be called children of God.

10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

The people who are abused for righteousness’ sake, that is because they are obedient to God, will obtain the Kingdom of Heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

People might say things against people that Jesus wouldn’t consider true. People might be insulted and abused because they believe in God and still they do what Jesus commands. Even through all of this is happening to them they should rejoice and be happy because they will obtain a wonderful reward in Heaven.
